It's safe to dance again Canada!

The Men Without Hats are suiting up (presumably without hats) for another tour! Yeah, you read that right; They are planning a come-back tour. Yahoo Canada News tells us: "The Montreal band, which broke big in the 1980s with "The Safety Dance" and "Pop Goes the World," is hitting the road for the first time in two decades."

You might not know them for much, but I refuse to believe that you don't know the Safety Dance. If you're still confused go Google it. If you're still a bit lost, then hop over to YouTube and watch the incredibly odd music video. No, seriously, we'll wait...just go look it up. There's midgets and dancing... awesome stuff!

Back? Okay, so that's the scoop. Tour dates will be announced and people everywhere will be reunited with the 80s like never before.

Cheers to the 80's, thirty years can't keep us apart!

More theft from the PM?

A few years back, PM Stephen Harper was found to have stolen a speech from an American politician. This year, Harper seems to be following a similar tactic by borrowing some style from more American Republicans. Is it too much to ask that Canadian culture not be regurgitated American media? It's one thing for Harper to accuse the Liberal leader Ignatieff of being a trader for living in the States; it's another thing altogether for Harper to want to bring the States to Canada.

Cheers to Canada, we like to define ourselves as "Not-Americans", so why do we like to vote like them?

General Ignorance: Where's your heart at?

Everyone once in a while I like to include from general ignorance updates on the blog. Some of you have actually learned some things from it. There are things with names we never learn... there are common misconceptions that never seem to go away... I try to take these things and teach you all a little something about the world around you. Today's installment, is straight from the heart:
Picture
This image might look a little funny to you. You might be thinking, "why is that man's heart so centered... isn't it supposed to be off to the left?" Well you wouldn't be alone if you're asking these things. It's a general misconception that the human heart sits to the left of the body. The truth is that the heart is actually very central to your being.

The reason we are taught that it sits to the left is the main beating muscles that cause us to sense the heartbeat happen to the left of itself. The mass of the heart is actually 90% centered though.

Cheers to the things we think we know and how often they aren't what we think at all.

As a Canadian citizen you're probably familiar with the voting process. In the last 5 years we've been to the polls twice and are gearing up for another. You've probably even voted provincially in that timespan. You might be thinking then, what's new? What is different about this election...

There are a few things. For one there's the platforms on which the politicians are running, but that's mostly old news; so what about the rules? Yeah, the rules of the vote. No, we didn't finally pass voting reform. There will be no proportional representation in this election, but there is an important rule that has changed...

Do not eat your ballot!

Picture
That's right! There will be not ballot eating this time around. Now, you might be asking yourself, "do we really need to have this as a rule?" and the answer is yes! In During the 2000 Canadian federal election, a number of voters (chiefly in Edmonton, Alberta) ate their ballots, as part of what they dubbed the Edible Ballot Society, to protest what they saw as inherently unfair elections. The stunt led Elections Canada to propose that there be legislation allowing federal ballots to be officially refused.

So there you have it; you can still enjoy eating your provincial election ballots, but don't try those games at the federal boxes. I should, however point out that it is legal to spoil your ballot. My favourite thing to do is make clever use of the 4 circles they give you. I'm sure you can find a four letter word that might accurately sum up your feelings for a federal election... Just remember that a spoiled ballot is counted, but a refused ballot is simply a "no vote" and doesn't account for a thing.

Cheers to the wacky Canadians, they'll have to be more creative in fighting democracy!

Chaos seconds into inaugural Le Mans race

The Le Mans series kicked off to a nasty start this morning as the green flag dropped. A multi-car pile-up followed only seconds later as the "Safety Car" (the equivalent to NASCAR's pace car) made a grave error in judgment. The start/finish line of the track at La Castelette, where the 6-hour inaugural race was held, is on a slight hill. The grade of the hill was just enough that the GT3 pack, about mid-way down the line-up, could only see the green lights. Typically, when the lights go green the cars ahead gun it and clear the way. Unfortunately this morning the safety-car did not remove itself from the track and caused the front cars to not Go. The GT3 pack opened the throttles and quickly found resistance causing a mass bunching of cars.

Cheers to millions of dollars of damage caused by just a single error in judgement. Guess who won't be driving the safety car anymore...

Are you sure they aren't priests?

Picture
In journalism the importance of editors is very very important...without editng sometimes things just don't make cents... On that note! Epic headline for the win!

I'm not entirely sure what they meant to say here. I believe maybe there should have been an "on" between agree and sex.

Cheers to epic headlines!

It's important that we remember this

I usually don't post very serious things on here, and I try to keep it up beat. Unfortunately this isn't the time to be making jokes. We, Canadians, need to take a close look at just what the "Harper Government" has done to our global image. Canada is a place of peace and a place envied and cherished. We have long been the voice of reason, the calm and collected masses.

By re-electing Stephen Harper we okay this sort of behaviour. We say to the world that we are just as good as this video makes us. Don't stand for "Harper's Canada"... take back Canada for Canadians!

Cheers to Canadians, the real ones!
