Don't let the pic fool you, YouTuber 1Veritasium explains the forces of nature in his science based vids without sexual innuendo... the bad dick joke was all me. Check out on his channel here, or watch him explain forces like gravity below:

Cananda ranks 2nd in Democracy!

Picture
Click the chart for enlarged view.
So the CIA released it's annual "CIA World Factbook" which ranks countries worldwide on thousands of different categories. It would see that Canada and the Aussies are neck in neck to take the gold for democracy. This chart really puts things into perspective the things we take for granted in Canada while living so precariously close our neighbours to the South.

Cheers to Canada...and heck to Australia too. We're not perfect, but we're still setting the example of what a country should be.

Click the chart above for larger view.

This is just freaky...and cute; I'm torn!

If you can look at this and not laugh out loud, I'm afraid you're no longer welcome on the site. Just for the record...

Cheers to Caturday! I hope you're having a lazy one!

Happy Caturday! Andy Warhol style!

Picture
There will certainly be more caturday festivities in the afternoon, but I must apologize for the hiatus the blog has seemed to take in the last few days. Been busy celebrating "reading week" here and haven't spent much time at the computer. Much more to come in the next few days. Until then, cheers!

F'n Friday Easteregg!...of the day!

So here's a tidbit of useless knowledge for all the Beatles fans out there. (I hear there are a few of you...) In the song Hey Jude at 2:56 you can hear "Oh! F*cking Hell" in the background.

"From 2:56 to 2:58 of the song, someone can be heard to say, "Fucking hell!" There is some dispute as to who said this. According to sound engineers Ken Scott and Geoff Emerick, it was McCartney, and it was Lennon's idea to leave the mistake in the final mix. "'Paul hit a clunker on the piano and said a naughty word,' Lennon gleefully crowed, 'but I insisted we leave it in, buried just low enough so that it can barely be heard. Most people won't ever spot it...but we'll know it's there." -Wiki

Cheers to those wacky Beatles, it's a good thing they were bigger than Jesus or they wouldn't be able to get away with this stuff!

For once, it sorta is rocket science!

Picture
So recently a friend and I were talking about rotary engines and the incredible inefficiency of piston engines as we know them today. Now it's true that rotary engines have the benefit of not having moving parts stop, start, stop again, and restart in the opposite direction. This is where more engines lose out in the efficiency war. (In most racecars, pistons are made from lighter materials to help them in the process of changing direction and losing inertia.
I think most impressive is this following fact:

 A piston in an F1 car does 0-60mph in 0.0005 seconds experiencing 8600Gs & a weight of 6 tonnes.

That's right, the speeds it reaches are incredible and the connecting rod (the thing that holds the piston up as well as keeps it from flying off) has to bear the weight of over 12 000 lbs! (that's both 12 000 downward and 12 000 negative pounds!)

So next time you hear a high-reving engine, try to think of the pistons inside bouncing away an causing some mad numbers to dance in physic geeks' heads!

Cheers to mad-science and engineering. It's amazing that this sort of thing is common place in today's world!

Legless lizards...for real, not snakes.

Picture
The slow-worm, a legless lizard
So this is actually a thing...I'm not just being a sarcastic fool here. There genuinely exist such things as legless lizards. They differ from snakes in a few aspects, such as having eyelids, possessing external ear openings, lack of broad belly scales, and/or a very long tail (while snakes have a long body and short tail).
The tails are measured of course by the distance from their anus to the end of their spine/tail-bone. Snakes have tiny little tails.

Cheers to the weird things nature throws at us.

A new shape for New Zealand!

Picture
With the death toll risen to 113, the citizens of New Zealand are reminded of the devastating power of Mother Nature. In this photo we can see the actual shift of the earth which was distorted by the 6.3 magnitude quake.

Cheers to mother nature, stay humble.

  What makes Watson tic?

So some of you have asked the question about Watson (the IBM super computer that won Jeopardy and made humanity weep...) what is it running? Is it a Mac? Is it a PC? Well the answer is actually, it's neither.
Picture
So here's the scoop straight from IBM. I should warn you this is a geek-tastic list of improbable numbers and incredible specs:
